Consultation
Herbalists are holistic in their approach, which means they look at the ‘whole’ person in the context of their health issues. An initial consultation will involve a detailed case history, including diet, and herbs will be prescribed accordingly. Though some herbs may be given for ‘symptomatic’ relief, herbalists will usually focus on the underlying cause and give particular support to a body system, (e.g. nervous, digestive, and circulatory). Other important aspects contributing to good health will also be considered such as a sound diet, adequate sleep and rest, exercise, relaxation and a positive attitude.
An initial consultation will usually last 1.5 hours and may involve physical examination (including blood pressure etc). Dietary and lifestyle advice may also be given. A follow up consultation (lasting 30 minutes) will normally take place 2-3 weeks after the initial consultation, then four to six-weekly if necessary.
